Who are you?

Photographing to me is like dancing.

My name is John Zhuang. I am a freelance photographer, taking both color and B&W photos. Last year, I moved to Greater Boston area. Previously I have lived in Dallas, Texas for many years. My hometown is Nanjing, a scenic city with rich history in eastern China.

What kind of equipment do you use?

My primary camera is Canon EOS 20D Digital Camera (8.2 Megapixel). Previously, I mainly used Nikon N80 with Nikon lense 28-80mm, 70-300mm and 18-35mm. Other equipment list includes Bogen Manfrotto tripod, UV filters, polarizer fliters, macro lenses and camera flash.

How do you process a slide or film photo?

The digital camera fundamentally changes our way to process an image, but it does not change the skills and methods to take a good photo. This is the my way to process a slide or film photo before I switched to digital photography.   After photo slides or films being developed, I sort them into different album. Labeling them by date, place and events. First, I use a slide scanner to scan slides or films up to 3500 pixels. They are my first-hand archive files. Then I use professional image software Adobe Photoshop to edit the image files, resizing them to the certain size (500-600 pixels). Also make them as thumbnail images, make web pages. Finally I upload them to the site of my web host.

What kind of film do you previously use?

Before my use of the digital camera, I use mostly Fuji Professional Color Reversal Film (Fujichrome Provia, Velvia) for color photos. For black and white photos, I use Kodak T-Max (TMX, TMY) and Tri-X film. I also used Fuji Professional Color negative film for some shoots. For landscape photography, I usually pick low speed films which yield the result of fine grain and high quality images.

How do you get started in photography?

Involving photography was a gradual and unexpected one. I started to take photos for fun while I was a teenage. In 1993, I got a summer job in Key West, Florida. After I crossed many bridges to get to this tropical island, I was stunned by the beautiful scenery, then I took some nice shots while staying there.  In April 2000, while visiting my friend in New York City, I took some memorable photos which are included in Manhattan and World Trade Center pages.  Since then, I always brought my camera when I was on vacation, business trip or out of town.

How do you take that good shot?

Some people has talent since they were born: good image perception. That's really help them a lot when they take photos. However, for most people, taking good photos require lots of practice and experience. From selecting equipments, choosing right speed film, to handle camera properly, there are many elements to be considered to take a nice picture. Shooting a photo is like playing with light. Timing is a very important element. Dawn and dusk are some good time to take action. Other issue including shooting angle, lighting etc.
